Jonathan Smith Takes Helm as Michigan State’s New Head Football Coach

Jonathan Smith has been appointed as the 26th head football coach at Michigan State University. With a successful tenure at Oregon State, Smith transformed the Beavers into a top Pac-12 team. Under his guidance, Oregon State achieved a 25-13 record over three seasons, including a peak ranking of 11th in the College Football Playoff rankings and a win over Florida in the Las Vegas Bowl. Smith, known for his expertise in quarterback coaching, has coached seven All-Americans and numerous award winners at Oregon State.

His teams are recognized for their physicality and innovative play, particularly in controlling the line of scrimmage. Smith’s on-field achievements are matched by his commitment to academic success, as evidenced by the 151 Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll selections during his tenure.

Before Oregon State, Smith had a successful stint as offensive coordinator at Washington, contributing to the Huskies’ national prominence, including a Pac-12 title and a College Football Playoff berth in 2016. As a player, Smith was a standout quarterback at Oregon State, leading the team to its best season in 2000, and he holds several school records.

Smith’s coaching career includes roles at Idaho, Montana, Boise State, and Washington, contributing to various successful programs. His appointment at Michigan State, pending formal approval by the MSU Board of Trustees, is seen as the start of a new era for Spartan Football, with high expectations for success both on and off the field.
